Sony Xperia ZL Review and Price

Sony Xperia ZL
Sony Xperia ZL Review
Already sold on Sony’s latest Xperia Z handset? Not so fast. The Xperia Z isn’t the only great device that Sony announced at CES this year. Announced alongside the Z was the ZL, and it is very much its own beast of a phone.

With an equally robust feature set as the Z, the Xperia ZL is quite the charmer. It may lack the solid glass back the Xperia Z rocks, but it has quite a few tricks up its sleeve as well. That said, is the Xperia Z still the shining star in Sony’s lineup, or is the ZL up to snuff with its brother? In this review, we’ll see if the Xperia ZL has what it takes to be the next phone in your pocket.

DESIGN
DESIGN
Sony certainly used its current design language in crafting the dark and thin black slab that is the Xperia ZL. The ZL's clean lines, sleek rectangular shape, and glossy edges would fit right in if set next to the company's HDTVs and home theater equipment.

If you're expecting a luxurious build quality equal to that of the Xperia Z, you won't find it in the ZL. Unlike the Z, the Xperia ZL doesn't have a water- and dust-resistant chassis. The phone also has a more mundane plastic back and not the premium glass material the Xperia Z sports. Still, the ZL's textured back cover is pleasing to the touch, repels fingerprints, and offers a sure grip.

SOFTWARE
Running on Android 4.1.2, the Xperia ZL rocks one of the latest versions of the OS, and given that Sony is rather transparent when it comes to updating its handsets, you'll likely be kept up to date as to when the ZL will be the next OS bump.

The software experience on the ZL, like the Z, is very unique. The UI is filled with small, enjoyable animations that aren't in your face. There's also a healthy amount of Sony-developed applications that will provide you with the full Xperia experience, like Walkman, Sony Select, Sociallife, Wisepilot for Xperia, Xperia Link, Remote Control, and much more. Sony also offers up an application called Update Center that allows you to update the Sony applications, as well as system updates.

Sony also provides a decent selection of widgets to adorn your ZL's home screen with. The photo gallery widget allows you to scroll through all of your photos with a nice 3D effect -- a nod to Timescape.
The software on the ZL also offers up eight different themes for your homescreen, with options like Silk, Amethyst, Sapphire, and Emerald. Once you've selected your theme, the notification LED will also change to the same color, which is a nice touch.

Sony offers up a pretty great photo gallery experience on the ZL. The application is divided into two tabs: Pictures and Albums. In the Pictures section, photos are divided by months, and you can easily pinch to zoom to get a better view of the photos without needing select a specific photo. When tapping on the Albums section, you can choose from Facebook, Picasa, and Globe, which will show you geo-tagged photos in a nifty 3D globe. You can also view photos from media servers on your home network.

CAMERA
CAMERA
Exmor RS for mobile – the world’s first image sensor with HDR video for smartphones
HDR for photos and videos captures natural colours in any light. HDR (High Dynamic Range) is an imaging technology used to capture clear photos against strong backlight. With HDR, the camera captures the same image at different exposure levels and layers them to create one optimised photo.

Xperia ZL introduces HDR to video, so that you can film even in high contrast situations, like in front of a window or with the sun behind your subject.

As you also could expect, the camera on the Xperia ZL offers a top-notch experience. Sony has implemented some great features in the camera software, making it pretty fantastic. Sony knows a thing or two about cameras, given its Cybershot line of digital shooters, and that shines through within the Xperia ZL.
The 13 megapixel camera on the ZL takes advantage of Sony's next-gen Exmor RS sensor, which produces high quality photos across the board. Funny enough, the viewfinder doesn't do that great of a job showing the subject in low-light situations, but a visit to the gallery with show you a very clear image. It's pretty impressive. Likely the only other slight issue with the camera is that is can be a bit slow at times, but that will likely be remedied with an update.

The camera software provides a wealth of features, allowing you to do just about anything you'd want on a smartphone camera and then some.

One of the features I enjoyed the most on the camera was the Superior Auto feature, which automatically changes the focus mode depending on the subject, proximity, or movement. If you're very close to the subject, the camera will automatically adjust to Macro mode. If you're catching a moving object, it will switch to action mode. Many phones have these features, but you manually need to change them, so it's pretty cool to see that the Xperia ZL can do this on the fly.

BlackBerry Q10 Review and Price UK
BlackBerry Q10 Review and Price UK

Formally unveiled alongside the company’s new BB10 operating system back in January, new details have suggested the BlackBerry Q10 UK release date will be held on April 26.

An arrival that would see the QWERTY hosting handset touch down on the same day as the eagerly awaited Samsung Galaxy S4, latest reports have seen online retailer Unlocked Mobiles list the device alongside an April 26 BlackBerry Q10 UK release date.

With the handset previously tipped to hit retailers in April, the latest BlackBerry Q10 reports are the first to point towards and exact date of arrival for the first BlackBerry 10 handset to feature a physical keyboard. As well as teasing a potential arrival, the retailer listing has suggested that a BlackBerry Q10 price tag will see the device set wannabe owners back £529.98 on a SIM-free basis.

“Stock expected 26th April. Customers advised to Pre Order early to guarantee a handset from batch 1,” a listing on the BlackBerry Q10 page of the Unlocked Mobiles site reads.

Despite retailers teasing the handset’s upcoming arrival, BlackBerry has as yet failed to formally confirm when consumers can expect to get their mitts on the BlackBerry Z10 sibling. In a statement to TrustedReviews an official BlackBerry spokesperson said: “BlackBerry is yet to confirm pricing and availability for the Q10 but we will keep you posted.”

BlackBerry Q10 Specs
As the first BlackBerry 10 handset to sport a physical QWERTY keyboard, the BlackBerry Q10 merges the old and the new of the Canadian handset manufacturer, building around the new OS with a combination of physical and touchscreen commands.

Lining up at 10.4mm thick, the BlackBerry Q10 features a 3.1-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with a HD content appealing 720 x 720p resolution. With a 1.5GHz processor to be paired with 2GB of RAM, the Q10 will feature 16GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD up to 64GB.

With an 8-megapixel rear-mounted camera paired with a second snapper up front, the BlackBerry Q10 specs sheet is completed by a 2100mAh battery, inbuilt Wi-Fi and NFC technologies.

The Porsche Design P'9981 from BlackBerry Review

When the first photos of the P'9981 emerged on the internet back on September 9th of 2011, nobody knew what to think of them. Overall the phone had the look of a BlackBerry, complete with a BlackBerry logo above the display. At the same time, the phone looked like no other BlackBerry on the market, and the word PROCEEDING inscribed into the top front of the casing seemed odd. Was this an unfinished hardware prototype of a next-generation QNX BlackBerry that was still running the old BlackBerry OS? Or maybe it was somebody's elaborate mod job to a 9900? We were all confused, to say the least.

It tookteam barely 24 hours to get to the bottom of it, and the next day we posted that the device was absolutely legit, was codenamed "BlackBerry Knight" and was actually a collaboration between Porsche Design and BlackBerry to create an exclusive BlackBerry offering. Less than two months later on October 27th, Research In Motion officially unveiled the Porsche Design P'9981 Smartphone from BlackBerry in Dubai.

Based on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 hardware platform and running on the BlackBerry 7 operating system, the phone would go to market with an incredibly long product name -- Porsche Design P Ninety Nine Eighty One Smartphone from BlackBerry -- to match the incredibly steep $2,000 price tag. The phone first became available overseas and is now available in North America. Don't call your carrier looking for the P'9981. It is only available from Porsche Design stores (see locations).

In late February both me and my better half (Miss CrackBerry) started using the P'9981, both moving over to it from the Bold 9900. I wasn't in a rush to get this review posted. With demand for the phone relatively low and with a price tag as high it is, I'd rather post my thoughts on it once I've really put it to use for a month, including a couple of weeks spent roaming on different carriers while traveling.

BlackBerry Z10 - Review
bb z10

Is this new model better than the last?
The BlackBerry Z10 is a substantial improvement over previous BlackBerry smartphones. Packing the all-new BlackBerry 10 operating system, Z10 brings a ground-up overhaul of everything you once knew about BlackBerry. The hardware is better, the software is better, and the multi-carrier availability (once it lands in the States) will be quite nice.

What changes were made?
It's almost easier to ask "what changes weren't made?" This is a ground-up overhaul for BlackBerry, and they're hedging the entire company on the success of this new platform. Among some improvements:
  • The Z10's hardware is a giant step forward. It packs a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU, 4.2-inch HD display, 2 GB of RAM, a 1,800 mAh battery, and 4G LTE connectivity (in most markets). The hardware itself is well-designed, and still retains a corporate look and feel for those legacy BlackBerry users.
  • The camera is improved and offers new features like TimeShift, which allows you to take multiple pictures and choose the best face(s) - all without modifying the existing picture.
  • The on-screen keyboard is a huge improvement from the Storm days, with fantastic prediction software.
  • BlackBerry 10 exudes a far more modern feel, though the exact gestures will take some time to get used to. The personalization isn't quite to par with other OSes on the market, and the file system needs some work.
  • It's new! For those fatigued with Android, iOS, and Windows Phone, this could be a device to turn to.
How's the hardware?
The BlackBerry Z10 is a beautifully designed piece of hardware. Featuring a 4.2-inch HD display, Z10 is packaged in a body that looks very similar to the iPhone 5. You'll find HDMI and microUSB ports on the left spine, and a volume rocker on the right spine.

How's the software experience?
BlackBerry 10 is a marked improvement over BlackBerry 7, the company's antiquated former operating system. It brings the company once known as RIM into the spotlight with new gestures, apps, and more. The BlackBerry Hub is the new place to get all of your information - BBM, email, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, text messages, and more. I like the organizational flow of the OS, but find that the gestures are hard to learn and often fail. The software also has quirks. In the time I've been working with it, I've experienced more than a few random errors, force closes, and freezes.

What's great about the BlackBerry Z10?
The hardware is very solid, and revisits the age-old "can smaller smartphones exist in today's market?" question. It's easy to hold in the hand and packs some fantastic specifications, proving that huge size and incredible performance don't have to go hand-in-hand (ahem, Android).

What should be changed?
The all-gesture approach of BlackBerry 10 is solid, but the learning curve is immense, which I expect will turn off those used to Android and iOS. In addition, the young app store is better than ever before, but both it and the overall ecosystem still pale in comparison to others. Battery life is also an issue. As the former battery champ of the smartphone space, overall usage time could be much higher.

What's the real verdict?
The BlackBerry Z10 is a substantial leap forward for BlackBerry. It brings the company into the 21st century with a modern smartphone with a dual-core processor, HD display, LTE connectivity, and an improved camera. The software is much improved, and unlike the BlackBerry Storm series, it's a solid smartphone with a few really nice features. The problem? It's too little too late. There aren't enough BlackBerry 10 choices for consumers to choose from, the Z10 is launching too late in the United States, and the app selection is still behind. Given the price point, it's hard to see anyone choosing this over the Android and iOS options out there - right now.

Stay tuned for the full review, and let me know what you'd like to see covered in the comments below!

SONY Xperia L Review
SONY Xperia L Review
The Sony Xperia L will soon be joining the new Sony Xperia SP in bolstering the company’s mid-range portfolio for 2013, alongside their new flagship: the Sony Xperia Z. Whilst the Xperia SP holds up the mid-range 4G camp, the L looks set to serve as a powerful, affordable 3G alternative. We were able to get an early look at the L ahead of its arrival to market.

At first glance we were wary of the overall design, strongly reminiscent of the less-than-stellar Sony Xperia J, but once we got our hands on the device, our frowns abated. Just as with the Xperia SP, the L will come in three colour options at launch: black, white and red; the white version (seen here) looked particularly attractive, with a soft touch removable backing, chromed accents and a curved Xperia Arc-esq profile.

In the hand the sharp edge skirting the border of the phone isn’t all that comfortable when gripped tightly but the curved back means that it sits nicely in the hand with the soft touch back providing a usable level of grip. Although reminiscent of the Xperia J, the overall look and feel of the Xperia L is high quality, with the larger lens of the phone’s 8-megapixel camera (capable of 720p HD video) sporting a metal surround and a distinctive metal power/lock key down the right side of the phone’ body.

As well as losing out on 4G, the Xperia L forgoes a few more upper-tier specs to keep costs down but still produces a premium, responsive user experience thanks in part to Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and Sony’s own user interface tweaks. The brain of the Xperia L is in fact a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 dual-core processor twinned to 1GB of RAM with 8GB of inbuilt memory and the option for expansion via microSD up to 32GB. Graphics fall to a respectable Adreno 305GPU too.
