SONY Xperia SP Specifications, Features and Review

Sony Xperia ™ SP
The Xperia SP has a few differences from the flagship model of the series. The first being that it is not dust or waterproof for starters. However, not everyone is willing to pay more for such protection so the Xperia SP could suit a lot of people. The SP version comes with an aluminium body ( rather than glass ) which may also suit many people as it will definitely be tougher and less prone to chips and scratches than the Xperia Z.

The Xperia SP comes with Android Jelly Bean (4.1), a 4.6 inch Mobile Bravia 2 Display and a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, a 1.7 Ghz dual-core processor, 8GB on-board memory with microSD support, 8 mega-pixel Exmor R camera and NFC & 4G LTE Support.

Physically, the SP measures 130.6 x 67.1 x 9.98 mm and weighs 155g so its pretty much an all round mid-range smartphone and this is just where Sony has placed it within the Xperia range. The Xperia SP will arrive sometime in either May, June or July and come in three colours : White, Red & Black.

    Quality precision craftsmanship
Xperia SP lifts craftsmanship to a whole new level. Using co-moulding technology which allowed us to create a unique solid design, this HD phone comes with a seamless look and feel that melts into ones hand. Paired with premium materials, Sony engineering and precision-crafted details, you’ll get a smartphone that lets you experience true design innovation.
    Display
SONY Xperia SP HD Reality Display
Truly impressive viewing – HD Reality Display
Feel like you’re there with the razor sharp and super bright HD screen. An HD phone, Xperia SP brings you one of the highest levels of screen resolution available – 720 progressive scan, for crisp pictures and no jagged edges. Expertise from our BRAVIA® TV engineers goes into our mobile screens, to bring you the same quality you’d expect from a top quality HDTV. The 4.6” HD Reality Display provides razor sharp pictures – and superior brightness. And with the wide colour gamut it gives you the widest colour spectrum, so you can view every detail in vivid colour.

True Screen intelligence – Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2 The second generation of our acclaimed Mobile BRAVIA® Engine, Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2 delivers an even better viewing experience by adding new real-time contrast optimisation to the sharpness enhancement, high-quality colour management and noise reduction. Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2 is also able to analyse content type and adjust the image accordingly. Adding Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2 to the Reality Display makes for an intelligent screen – one that adapts automatically to display your content in the best way.
    1. Contrast enhancement
Contrast in images and video is enhanced by making the darkest parts slightly darker, which brings out details in the picture.
    2. Colour Management
Colour saturation is increased for specified colour ranges, which makes the colours deeper and more vivid. And the intelligent Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2 software reproduces skin colour exactly as it appears to the naked eye.
    3. Noise reduction
Distortion and noise is reduced when streaming low-quality video from online sources, such as YouTube. Noise is reduced both to individual frames and between frames, for clearer viewing.
    4. Sharpness filter
Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2 applies a sharpness filter to increase the overall detail level in the image. This is done by enhancing the edges and contrast without increasing noise.
Building something bright and brilliant BRAVIA® engineers have discovered that we remember colours more vividly than they really are. That’s the kind of knowledge they put into creating brilliant colours for our screens. Get a peek at this precision craftsmanship in the video.

     SONY Xperia SP - Review
JAPANESE PHONE MAKER Sony unveiled the Xperia SP smartphone earlier this week, along with the cheaper Sony Xperia L handset. Both phones should appeal to those that don't fancy coughing up big bucks for Sony's flagship Xperia Z smartphone, and they offer some of that handset's standout features. We got our mitts on the Sony Xperia SP handset, which looks nothing like its older, more expensive brother. The handset's fully plastic casing feels much cheaper than that of the Xperia Z, but that's okay, considering that it's much cheaper. The XP isn't a bad looking device. We got the white model, which has a minimalistic, stylish feel to it, aided by the illuminating bar at the bottom of the phone that lights up to match what's showing on the screen.
    SONY Xperia SP
The Sony Xperia SP features a decent 4.6in HD 720p Bravia display. While this doesn't match the HD 1080p touchscreen found on the Xperia Z, it proved impressive during our hands-on time, displaying vivid images and crystal-clear text. Our only slight gripe is that colours can look a little washed out, compared to the Clearblack displays on Nokia's Windows Phone devices.
    SONY Xperia SP
This screen is backed up by a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core 1.7GHz processor, and we noticed no lag whatsoever while using the handset. However, we have yet to put the Sony Xperia SP through its paces, but we'll be sure to do so in our full review. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is the Sony Xperia SP's mobile operating system of choice, and while it's not Google's most up to date Android 4.2 version, it furnishes the phone with most of the latest features. However, Sony has marred this somewhat by loading the Xperia SP with its custom user interface. As we pointed out in our Sony Xperia Z review, this custom skin is not nearly as obtrusive as previous iterations, but it still loads up the handset with a bunch of apps that most users will probably never give a second look at.
    SONY Xperia SP
For example, fire up the handset and you're greeted with Sony's Walkman and Video apps, which during previous tests have proven to be no better than the stock Android alternatives. The Sony Xperia SP, despite being a mid-range handset, sports an 8MP camera on its rear complete with autofocus, LED flash, HDR mode and the ability to shoot HD 1080p video. We had a quick play with the camera, and although we were in a dark venue, it managed to perform well. We did find that the flash made pictures slighty overexposed and noisy, so we'll be sure to test this further in our full review. There's also a 0.3MP front-facing camera for video calling, although we have yet to put this through its paces. On first impressions the Sony Xperia SP is a decent, well configured mid-range smartphone. However, it has some fierce competition in the mobile market from Nokia and Samsung, and we're not fully convinced that Sony has done enough here to win over budget conscious smartphone buyers. Samsung Galaxy S III Mini Review
The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini is the Korean manufacturer's attempt to cash in on the popularity of its flagship handset. It inherits the looks and features of the Galaxy S3, but shrinks down the screen size to 4in.

The Galaxy S3 Mini shares the off-white colour, chrome border and gently curved shape of its big brother, and there are familiar touches elsewhere: the home button below the screen, the Samsung logo above the panel, and the power button on the right-hand edge all look the same. The removable rear cover is still a flimsy piece of plastic, but there’s little give in the Mini’s 9.9mm-thick chassis.

The screen’s 480 x 800 resolution can’t match the glorious 720 x 1,280 of the full-fat Galaxy S3, however. Indeed, it shares its resolution with the mid-range Nokia Lumia 620, and we didn’t have to look too closely to see individual pixels, with text and images lacking the sharpness of high-end handsets
Samsung Galaxy S III Mini Review
The technology behind the S3 Mini’s display is AMOLED, the same as the Galaxy S3, but it can’t match its sibling for quality. When we measured its brightness, it returned a result of 182cd/m2 – the Galaxy S3’s display hits 240cd/m2 – and we didn’t like the blue cast it gives to light colours, either. Neither can it match the Lumia 620, which has a superb top brightness of 543cd/m2 and more natural-looking colours.
Inside, the Mini is powered by a NovaThor U8420 processor, which we haven’t seen in a smartphone before. It’s a dual-core, 1GHz part, just like the Lumia’s Snapdragon S4, but the S3 Mini’s SunSpider score of 1,888ms lags behind the Lumia 620’s 1,449ms result, and its Quadrant score of 3,245 isn’t anything to write home about, either.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Feel and Build
Again, where feel is concerned, Samsung’s latest tablet just isn’t quite on the ball. Don’t get us wrong, the plastics feel solid and the slightly bulging silver surround helps to provide a decent grip. But the slick, glossy back isn’t particularly pleasant under the fingers and doesn’t give much traction.

As a result, the Galaxy Note 10.1 just doesn’t lie as securely in the hand as other premium all-plastic tablets like the textured Transformer Pad 300, or of course the anodised aluminium back of the new iPad.
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Feel and Build
However, build quality is pretty good. The plastics used throughout are very solid except for the rear panel which flexes slightly if you press in on it, but nowhere else is there a hint of flex or creak in normal usage. Our only real concern here is that glossy plastics tend to scratch easily, but we found no evidence of this happening on our Note.
